Audrey Niffenegger gets $5 million for her next novel
And you know what? She deserves it. Her The Time Traveler's Wife is one of the best science-fiction novels I've ever read.
The New York Times has the scoop.

Library Journal on Wake: "Sawyer's erudition, eclecticism, and masterly storytelling make this a choice selection."

That's fantastic news!
The Time Traveler's Wife is definitely in my top ten time travel books. She deserves it.
Any idea how it got out-of-category classification? My copy doesn't contain the words "science fiction" anywhere that I can see (the words "time traveler" excepted :)
Is it because she was published by a non-genre house? Is it because it's a love story?
I've been saying for a while now that the very best way to have a breakout bestselling science-fiction novel is to have never been associated with the genre: Margaret Atwood, P.D. James, Michael Crichton, J.D. Robb, Walter Moseley, Audrey Niffenegger. Being an SF-category author has its rewards, but there's a definite glass ceiling; it's way better in terms of reaching readers to not be published as SF.
But, unlike most attempts at SF by people from outside the genre, Niffenegger understands what she's doing: it's a fine, fine piece of SF.
(Oh, and I should have included Stephenie Meyer's THE HOST in the list above. But of them all, the Niffenegger is the best.)
