How can you not love a Worldcon whose slogan is, "A mile closer to the stars"?

this comment doesn't really connect to this post -- but whatever...

...i have been reading a lot lately about continuous partial attention syndrome... which is basically the idea that we have so many interrupt-driven tasks these days that our ability to concentrate for long periods of time is waning.

these discussions led me to reading about neal stephenson's stance on email and interaction with fans. in a nutshell: he doesn't do it because it cuts into his writing novels time.

and reading stephenson's posts, i realized that your web presence is the exact categorical opposite of his.

and it left me wondering: how do you manage your time? how do you respond to comments and emails and get knee-deep in forum debates and maintain your website and ALSO find the long, dedicated hours necessary for producing prose?

Well, it's a real challenge to balance it all. And I've certainly thought from time to time about copying Neal's approach. But I like interacting with people; it's part of what keeps me going. :)

Most people who live or work in big cities spend two hours a day commuting. I don't -- and so I use the time for other things. But I still get a full work day in on my writing. :)
