(And yes, American Heritage 4th, Merriam-Webster's 11th Collegiate, Random House Webster's, Webster's New World 4th, and Merriam-Webster's Third New International all show it as one word.)
It just struck me as unusual in a book I was reading ... :)
I like the word "strengths." Nine letters long, only one vowel.
