British edition of FlashForward

The British edition of FlashForward -- my novel which is the basis of the TV series of the same name -- published by Orion's Gollancz imprint, is due to hit stores in the UK next week. My UK editor, Simon Spanton, just wrote to say they've already gone back to press for a second printing, because new bookstore orders keep pouring in. Woohoo!

Awesome! That's pretty cool. Sounds like they did a bad calculation of the initial print run size!

Oh, I wouldn't say that, Kathy. Nobody knew for sure how big a hit the TV series was going to be (and we were a huge hit on Five in UK).

just curious... what does a "UK editor" do with a novel that is already written in English? is the text of the UK edition different in some way?

An editor can be either (or both) an acquisitions editor and a substantive editor. For FLASHFORWARD, which was bought back in 1998 by Tor, David G. Hartwell was both: he made the offer to commission the book from an outline, and he did the actual editing of the text.

In the case of FLASHFORWARD, Simon was the UK acquiring editor; he bought the book. He was also an acquiring editor on WAKE and WATCH, which he recently bought for the UK, and will be one of my (three!) substantive editors on WONDER, the final volume in the WWW trilogy (the other two are Ginjer Buchanan at Ace USA and Adrienne Kerr at Penguin Canada).

But, actually, yes, since Orion Gollancz newly typeset the book (whereas the new Tor editions use the old typesetting), I took the opportunity to correct typos and a few other things in the UK text; I'd say their edition is actually the definitive text now.

That's interesting to learn the distinction between different types of editors. Thanks Rob
