Writers of the Future

Carolyn and I spent from Thursday afternoon until this morning (Sunday) in San Diego at the 22nd annual L. Ron Hubbard's Writers and Illustrators of the Future awards weekend (I'm one of the judges for the writing contest). As always, it was a fabulous event, and we had a great time.

Rob, I think you said earlier that your life rocks--you've proved it yet again with this post!

I think the photo that made me go "woah" most was the one of you on the beach with Larry Niven. LARRY NIVEN. Dude! You and Larry, hanging around on the beach. Just chillin'. I was at the beach today, too, but I can safely say there were no legendary SF authors in sight. ;-)

I'm not making sense--just wanted to comment that your life is so COOL!

Hey Rob,
your involved with WOTF?

Wow.

I recall in the mid 1990's I submitted about a half a doz stories to them. WOTF is a tough market to break into. I figured I'd have as much chance getting a story accepted n any one of their quarters as I would having a novel accepted from the slush pile or winning the 6/49.

Do they still send out those white postcards to writers after they have received a story submission? I think I've got about a half doz of them around here someplace.

Bonnie Jean: hee hee hee! Many thanks!

Jim: this is my third year at the Writers of the Future banquet. I don't know what they do in terms of acknowledging submissions, but I will say this: the quality of the work that gets passed on to the judges is amazingly high. I've been blown away by all the stories I've read.

I might start submitting to them again. I've got a few stories I'm confident with. I like to think my work has improved at least little bit in over the last 10 years. :-)

Thanks

Hi, Lou. Sarah won a fiction award, not an illustrator's award; she's a very fine writer.

That's my fault, Lou; I misspelled her name (now corrected) in my blog entry. It's Sarah Totton, not Totten. :) Try Googling again; she has a home page.

Wow, all of the heavy weights were there, looks like you guys had a great time. Too bad I'm on the other side of the world right now, that would have been a great event to go to. Cool things happen in San Diego when I'm not around!
