Amazon and ebooks
My friend Virginia O'Dine just drew this to my attenion:
Amazon.com has notified its publisher and author clients that it plans to cease offering e-books in the Microsoft Reader and Adobe e-book formats. They're only going to be selling Kindle ebooks (for the hardware device they make) and Mobipocket -- and Amazon.com owns Mobipocket.
Man, I'd love to see that lawsuit: Microsoft suing Amazon over monopolistic business practices!

If anyone knows about monopolies, it's Microsoft.
That was my point. ;)
I've been looking at getting the Sony e-reader. It would be a shame if I couldn't buy e-books off of Amazon for it.
My reaction to the Sony Reader 505 is here.
Tangentially related, here's a self-publishing site that seems to be getting good ratings. For anybody publishing a book on the site, apparently the company will convert your ebook to all known ebook formats without extra charge - in contrast to Amazon, who charge $$ to convert to Kindle. Not useful for books published elsewhere, but still something that might be worth noting. If nothing else, sites like this might force Amazon to be a little bit more accommodating. I won't hold my breath though.
Nah, I think I'll stick to buying my ebooks off Fictionwise. Thanks for pointing me to that website years ago Rob!
