Copyright and the Web

My friend Kirstin Morrell drew this fascinating article entitled "How the anti-copyright lobby makes big business richer," from The Register, to my attention. In general, it's about how the web has been demolishing the ability of creative people to make a living; in particular, it's a photojournalist's perspective on that. In light of all the mindless bandwagoning for the opposite perspective, it's a very interesting read.

Great link. I've worked on a few daily newspapers and monthly magazines during the 21st century, and I can say I've seen a huge push on the part of upper management to increase reader participation at every publication I've worked for, but never with a corresponding increase in quality. (Some readers, in fact, are very vocal about their annoyance at being asked to produce their own content. Which makes sense--if they'd wanted to work in journalism, they'd have become journalists.)
